When creating the perfect quilt, thread choice is extremely important.
Just like fabric choices, there are many types and colors of threads to choose
from. When you don't want you thread to show show, then choose the closest
color to your fabric as possible. If your quilt is multicolored then a grey
quilting thread is best. There are clear "invisible" threads such as mono filament.
If you quilt will be used a lot, choose strong cotton thread. The rule of thumb
when selecting thread is to match the thread to the type of material you're
using.
Many hand quilters coat the thread in beeswax to prevent tangling and it also
strengthens the thread.
There are hand quilting threads and machine quilting threads. Machine threads
are not as strong- but the machine makes a much tighter stitch that is more durable.
Even embroidery floss is used in crazy quilts or any quilt where the stitching is the
focal point.
The amount of thread on a spool varies from 300 yards up to 2500 yards. The larger
spools are usually made for machine quilting.
Color choices come in solids, multi color patterns and even metallic.
