Knowledge of rotary cutting is essential in quilt making to make
sure blocks are of equal size, all sides match, and corners
connect properly.
Without rotary cutters, there would be far less quilters today.
There are a couple of safety tips before you start cutting.
1) Always cut away from yourself.
2) Always keep your fingers completely on the straight edge or ruler
Before cutting, it is essential that fabric be washed and ironed.
To begin, lay the fabric on the cutting mat with the folded edge toward
you and raw edge to the right. (left handed to the left) Put the ruler
on the fabric with one of the lines on the ruler directly on the folded edge
of the fabric. Carefully cut upward along the ruler edge using a fair
amount of pressure. Turn the cutting mat around so the straight edge
is facing left. (left handed facing right) You can now cut strips or squares
evenly.
Make sure you are always using fresh and sharp blades. Dull blades take
the fun out of quilt making. There are several sizes of blades and cutters
available.
Check them all out here and happy cutting!!!!
