How big is your quilting supply? Whether you are a beginner or an expert or
somewhere in between you can never have too many quilting supplies.
There are hundreds of rulers to choose from. There are rulers as small as
4x4 inches and rulers that can cut shapes too. Rulers have grids printed on
them so you can measure smaller sizes with a larger ruler. Some great rulers
are made by Omnigrid. Rulers make accurate cutting of fabric squares a breeze.
You must buy a good quality cutting mat for your fabric. Most mats are self
healing and come in a varied selection of sizes. You can even have a mat custom
sized and made for you. A good cutting mat is numbered on the all four sides.
Make sure your mat has markings for diagonal cutting. A good cutting mat
makes cutting accurate block patterns and patchwork easy.
Rotary cutters are huge times savers when making quilts. They eliminate the
need to individually mark and cut fabric. Rotary cutters allow you to cut
several pieces of fabric at the same time. You can choose from straight
handles to curved, soft grip and hard grip. Rotary blades vary in size from
18mm to 60mm. The large blades make it easy to cut through several layers
of fabric at a time. Smaller blades cut curves easily. Do a little research
to find out which cutter is best for you.
Other supplies you may consider are thimbles to make hand applique easier.
Needles for hand work and for your sewing machine. Straight quilting pins-
make sure you buy fine, sharp pins that won't leave marks in your fabric.
You can begin with a few tools and supplies, but it won't be long before you
have put together a great collection of tools and supplies to make quilting fun
and easy.
