     Quilting has been popular for centuries.  We know that quilting pieces of material together and using them for clothing was used all over the world.  It is believed that quilting began in China and Egypt.  The earliest documented quilt was found and dated to around 3400 BC.

     The old saying, "The mother of invention is necessity" is very true.  Due to very harsh winter seasons the early Europeans would make quilts out of necessity.  As a result of of the many layers that were to be stitched together the quilting frame was yet another necessity.  This made it possible to now stitch finer, more decorative designs.

     "Yosegire", is a descriptive term for a kind of crazy piecing that is used to decorate clothing.  This technique was the inspiration for what we know today as crazy quilting, mainly in America and Europe.  Crazy quilts are today mainly decorative pieces.  Many quilt shows today have separate sections designated for crazy quilts, and are a very popular attraction.

     The era of the quilting bees started in the 19th century in Europe and America.  One and sometimes even more quilts were made in an afternoon.  Women looked forward to getting out of the house and conversing with others while still doing something useful.

     Quilting will surely by popular for centuries to come.
