Machine Quilting Then and Now
Many quilters are quick to dismiss machine quilting as not
authentic- but in the 19th century Singer Sewing Machines
ran an ad for machine quilting. In 1871 Singer sold an
incredible 180,000 sewing machines.
Back in the late 1800's Mr. J.B. Robinson machine quilted a whole
cloth family tree quilt. The entire face of the quilt is free
motion quilted in white thread. His brother actually held the bulk
of the fabric as Mr. Robinson was quilting it on his machine. He
used a quilting attachment that was invented in 1892.
Machine quilting has come a long way since then. Machine quilting
can be done free hand or from a pattern. There are many easy,
free machine quilting patterns to be discovered here! Check out
these sites for machines and patterns on sale. Some even include
free shipping!
