Tips for purchasing quilt fabric
Understanding fabric and fiber content is extremely important
when buying fabric for quilting. 100% cotton fabrics are best. It
is a strong fabric and wears well. It's strong when wet and irons
and creases easily. The cotton should be color fast and should be
washed before beginning your quilt to avoid colors bleeding after your
quilt is finished. This is especially important if your quilt will be used
as a bed cover or blanket.
Many things should be taken into consideration when buying fabric.
Discount and sale fabrics are great but make sure they are of good
quality. The design and color are important also. Fabrics that have
a one way direction design can be difficult to incorporate into your quilt.
You may need to buy extra fabric to allow for cutting plaids or stripes.
Don't buy a large scale pattern fabric if you will be cutting it into small
pieces. The design will be lost in the small pieces.
Floral designs make up the largest group of printed fabrics and have
been used since ancient times. Geometric fabrics are very popular in quilts
as they provide an endless array of designs. Ethnic fabrics are wonderful
for family and heirloom quilt making.
So, wherever you order or buy you fabric, take all these things into
consideration.
